I hate the Canadian weather (extremely cold to the point that I physically understand how salmon in my freezer feels). BUT, I love the morning of winter. Even under stress, every morning in the past few weeks felt like Christmas was around. I don’t know how you guys feel about Christmas, but I love Christmas. Even New Year’s. So yeah, winter. When I say winter morning, this is what I mean: between 6:30-7:30 am, you're still under your duvet while the soft light from the sunrise comes into your window. I think I’ve been very fortunate with where I live because every morning I wake up to sunlight directly hitting my face and that makes me wake up. Outside is so tranquil and sometimes you can hear the birds chirping. I genuinely love that. I appreciate the ability to wake up every morning in peace. Anyway, I just wanted to say how much I love winter morning because it's just perfect combination of chilliness and warmth.
The main topic of this blog is art, and some people may have guessed it from the title name: Jean Michel Basquiat. He has been my absolute favorite artist since November 10, 2019. I went to his exhibition in Roppongi and I got chills. Literal goosebumps when I saw his artwork. Some people might not get the same reaction as me because I won’t lie, I have no idea what his artworks meant. Absolutely zero interpretation, but I’ve never encountered an exhibition that intrigued me that much until Basquiat's exhibition. I personally like artworks that are busy and open to interpretation. It doesn’t really make sense when you look at his artworks because you think to yourself “WHY IS HIS DRAWING LITERALLY LIKE A 5 YEARS OLD’S DRAWING?” or “IS THIS SOME TRIBE STUFF?” But according to some articles, they have deeper connotation of which he portrays racism and other societal issues in the US. I love how his artwork doesn't make me think deeply at first, but once you read the description, you kind of understand the intention behind it and start connecting things. I'm glad I encountered his artwork because I love artworks that are random in some ways.
I also love museums for their display of artworks, including the structure of exhibition and the frames used for each artwork. Personally, I like museums more than galleries because they have a lot of different artworks and have more carefully planned structure for displaying artworks. Whoever in charge of the exhibition/museum needs a raise because they thoroughly think about the lighting and its effect on displaying artwork. Also, the frames used for artworks, especially from the Renaissance period and other older period, are very detailed and pretty.
In conclusion, I want to highlight the ability to visit museums to enjoy art pieces and atmosphere. Especially if you like quiet places but also love to be surrounded by people, then museum is the place for you. It’s super fun to people-watch and imagine their lives. Last time, I was at AGO in Toronto, and two married couple (I assume) were walking at the same tempo with the same leg movements even though they weren’t talking or noticing each other’s movement. That made so much sense that you become similar to the people around you, especially the ones you love. Anyways, go to the museum!!!
Yapper's job is DONE for the day.
xoxo, Chinie
